Why Isn’t My Coaching Website Converting (and How to Fix it!)
If people are visiting your coaching website but not reaching out, it can feel confusing, disappointing and frustrating as hell! Maybe you DIY’d your website and you thought it was really great but now all you have are just crickets. Or maybe you hired a designer to do the hard work and its still just…crickets. Whatever avenue you took and whether you really like your website or hate it, not getting clients is a bummer and more than likely you have poured hours and dollars into your website and you just aren’t getting the ROI you thought you would.
You might be thinking:
“My work is solid… so why isn’t my website working?”
“Do I need better copy? A new design? More confidence?”
“Is it me or the website?”
What can I do to fix this? I’ve tried everything!
The good news?
Your website isn’t converting because of you or your skills. This isn’t a YOU problem, this is an issue with the website itself and maybe even how you’re choosing to market yourself and your business.
Essentially, the website (or your marketing) isn’t doing its job.
Let’s break down what’s really happening - and what you can do to fix it.
Conversion Isn’t About Pressure - It’s About Clarity + Trust
Many coaches assume conversion requires:
Louder messaging
Stronger persuasion
More urgency
But for the coaching industry as whole, conversion is rooted in clarity and trust, not pressure. I know all the marketing gurus out there would have you believe that scarcity and urgency sells and maybe at one point that was true. But the market has changed and its not true anymore. People want real connection, they want real results and they want 1-1 coaching with someone they can trust. The coaching industry requires trust and ethical business practices now more than ever. And its your website’s job to create that trust.
So take a look at your website and see if your potential clients can quickly understand:
Who you help
What problem you help them solve
What results they get when they work with you
The results and problems within your copy should be tangible and specific. If your website feels vague, overly poetic, or too broad, your website will not convert. Your clients need to have an emotional connection with your copy. They need to feel seen and heard by you. And this goes for all your messaging, whether its on your website, Instagram or LinkedIn.
Your Website Might Be Talking About You Instead of To Them
One of the most common issues I see on coaching websites is this:
The copy is beautifully written… but it’s centered on the coach. This is huge and probably the biggest issue I run into when working with coaches. Most coaches write copy centered on their process, or their credentials or who they are. What’s missing is the benefits that working with you gives your clients, or the problems they are facing! Your copy and your website in general needs to address their pain and what working with you will do for them. Not your process or how you get them there. This is often a subtle distinction that can be highly nuanced but its so important!
Your target audience is asking:
“Is this for me?”
“Do they understand my struggle?”
“Can they help with my situation?”
If your homepage leads with:
Your story
Your certifications
Your philosophy
…before addressing the client’s pain or desired transformation, you may be losing them before trust has time to form.
Here are a few ways you can use your website to create connection and trust:
Be transparent about your pricing: Your sales page should ALWAYS include your pricing. Make it obvious and apparent so they know what you charge before they get on that call with you. This leads to a better, easier conversation and creates immediate trust with your target audience. This ways your consults are never about convincing them to buy but instead can be about if you are a good fit to work together.
Have a clear vision about who you want to work with: Your business vision matters, (if you don’t have one, write one up). Who do you want to work with? Why do you want to work with them? How do you help them? What problems do they have? What do they really want? Then write your copy around that. Again this creates trust and attracts clients that you can really help and that will make your work more enjoyable.
Have a clear brand that feels like you: Your website is an introduction to you and your energy. Your branding should feel like you and it should also connect with your ideal client. Use imagery that matches your energy and speaks to the results your clients want (not their problems). Don’t use imagery to reinforce the negative experiences your clients are having.
Create a free offer that offers real value: Giving away value, like actual real value, creates a connection, gets people on your list and preps them for your high-end offers (like 1-1 coaching). There is no platform on the internet that converts like email marketing so please do this. Center your marketing strategy around getting people on your list so you can send them love letters that help them know you and trust you and want to work with you.
Add testimonials wherever possible: But make it pretty please *wink wink. Collect testimonials from every client whether you worked with them 1-1 or they took your course. Add these to your website in strategic places so you can show exactly the results you are getting for your clients.
Your Value Might Be Clear to You - But Not to Them
As a coach, you see the transformation clearly. But anyone visiting your website for the first time doesn’t. They are coming to your website to find out more about you and see if they can connect with you. Clarity is key.
If your services are described with phrases like:
“Empowering transformation”
“Helping you step into alignment”
“Supporting your highest self”
…without grounding them in real outcomes, clients may feel inspired, but they are not going to pay for vague results. They are looking for something tangible that really connects with what they are going through and why they are looking for a coach in the first place. Conversion happens when inspiration meets tangible specificity.
Your Calls-to-Action Might Be Too Soft (or Too Scattered)
Many coaches worry about being “too salesy,” so their CTAs become almost invisible or there are way too many. I get it. Call to actions can be daunting and sometimes we either go too aggressive or we just eliminate them all together.
Vague CTA’s like:
“Learn more”
“Explore”
“If you feel called…”
These just don’t convert. Make it fun, make it more personable, make it more connective! Have fun with your copy and put all your personality into it! Place your CTA buttons strategically throughout your website where it makes sense and naturally leads to a next step. Try using CTA’s like:
Let’s Get Started
Let’s Chat
Take the Next Step
Oooh, I want it!
I’m IN
Curious? Explore more
See the difference? If your website doesn’t clearly guide someone toward booking a call or signing up for your group coaching program they won’t hunt around your website for how to do it on their own. You need to guide them there, easily and effortlessly.
Your Website May Not Match Where Your Business Is Now
Another reason websites don’t convert? It's built for an earlier version of your business and you’ve been avoiding updating your website for a hot minute. Your website needs to move with your business and if its stuck back in 2020 and you’re still sending people there, but with totally different branding and messaging than your marketing, they will get confused and move on.
If your niche has broadened or refined, your confidence in your work has grown, your offers have evolved, or your branding has changed all of this needs to be reflected on your website, (not just Instagram).
Design and Messaging Have to Work Together
A strong coaching website needs both good design and good copy. Start with the copy first - this informs your design, layout and navigation. And once you have your copy down the design is much easier. When one is missing, conversions suffer.
Your layout should:
Guide the eye
Support confidence and authority
Make next steps feel obvious
Your messaging should:
Speak directly to your ideal client
Balance empathy with leadership
Make transformation feel possible
There are lots of moving parts to a website that converts and I get that it can feel daunting. My best and most solid advice is follow your gut. Follow it in your marketing and follow it when you update and change your website. If it tells you that you need professional help, find a website designer. If it tells you to get rid of an offer you hate - listen and do that. More often than not our intuition knows our next steps even when we can’t see the forest through the trees.
If your website feels like it should be working better - but you can’t quite see what’s off - a fresh perspective helps.
